Large Trees to Different Amounts of Available Soil Water 1

چکیده
Introduction A method was developed to manipulate avai lable so i l water on large trees by intercepting thrufal l with gutters placed under tree canopies and irrigating the intercepted thrufal l onto other trees . With this design, trees were exposed for 2 years to either 25 percent less thrufal l , normal thrufal l , or 25 percent addit ional thrufal l . Undercanopy construction in these plots moderately af fected patterns of thrufal l entry onto the forest Boor when compared to a plot without construction. In this pilot study, a variety of aboveground and belowground measurements were recorded from trees over the 2-year period. Additional amounts of thrufall increased circumference growth, l i t ter fa l l , fine-root biomass , ectomycorrhizal development , and number of fruit ing bodies of ectomycorrhizal fungi . Intercepted thrufall decreased amounts of ergosterol, a surrogate for soil a n d r o o t o r i g i n fungal biomass. Recommendations are made to improve and simplify the design, including arranging gutters to intercept more or less thrufal l at any t ime of year .

متن کاملEffect of tree roots on water infiltration rate into the soil
ABSTRACT- To study the effect of tree roots on increasing water infiltration in soil and also to determine and assess the coefficients of different infiltration models, some infiltration tests were performed in three tree plantation areas in Badjgah, Fars province with different soil textures (clay loam for pear plantation, sandy loam for grape plantation, loamy sand for pine trees). In each pl...
متن کاملEmission of volatile sulfur compounds from spruce trees.
Spruce (Picea Abies L.) trees from the same clone were supplied with different, but low, amounts of plant available sulfate in the soil (9.7-18.1 milligrams per 100 grams of soil). Branches attached to the trees were enclosed in a dynamic gas exchange cuvette and analyzed for the emission of volatile sulfur compounds. Independent of the sulfate supply in the soil, H(2)S was the predominant redu...
متن کاملWater use by Pinus radiata trees in a plantation.
We used the heat-pulse velocity technique to estimate transpirational water use of trees in an experimental 16-year-old Pinus radiata D. Don plantation in South Australia during a 4-month period from November 1993 to March 1994 (spring-summer). Fertilization and other silvicultural treatments during the first 8 years of the plantation produced trees ranging in diameter at a height of 1.3 m from...
متن کاملInvestigation of the effect of amount and size of gypsum particles on its performance in the improvement of saline and sodium soils
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Gypsum, sulfuric acid, and sulfur are used to improve saline and sodic soils. In some cases, animal manures are also used, which varies according to environmental conditions and soil type (Jesus et al., 2019). Industrial gypsum is often used to modify saline and sodic soils due to electrolyte maintenance, physical and hydraulic properties (Keren, 1996), low c...
